For those of you who may not know what My So Called Life is, you need to stop right here and go check it out on Hulu. This summer it was suggested to me that I watch MSCL because Claire Danes did a fabulous job portraying the 15 year old Angela Chase and plus it was just a really great teen drama. So knowing nothing about the series that was short-lived, only 19 of 22 episodes aired, I went to work on it.
Warning spoilers follow the break.
I was intrigued by the first five minutes of the pilot, not only because I was interested to see Claire pre-Carrie, but because this drama was everything 90s! Yes, I'm talking about the clothes, the hairstyles (Rayanne had some pretty funky ones throughout the series), the language, it was great. All the time while I was watching it, I couldn't help but wonder if this is how teens still behaved. Of course friends fought and friendships were lost, hookups happened in school hallways, but did we really still hangout in the bathroom like that? Or did we wander the streets at night? Surely rules became a lot stricter and our parents would never allow us to ride our bikes so late at night like Brian was always doing.
By the time I hit episode 18, I found myself putting off the final episode because I didn't want it to end. I had so many questions that I wanted answered and I needed to know that certain characters were going to be alright. Finally, I mustered up the courage to watch the final episode and I was somewhat satisfied with the way the series ended even though it was 3 episodes short of what it should have been.
By no means though does that mean I didn't have any burning questions like who and where was Tino all this time? I got the feeling he was either this cool upperclassman who never went to class or a dropout who had all the connections. Either way an appearance by him would have been awesome.
Do Rayanne and Angela become friends again? Practically the whole series was about their friendship and yet here we are left wondering if they'll ever speak to each other again. YOU CAN'T JUST DO THAT TO US!
Lastly, now that Angela realizes Brian wrote the letter for Jordan, will she leave Jordan (fingers crossed) and be with her true love, Brian Krakow? Come on people we can't be left hanging not knowing the fate of Angela Chase's love life!
Believe me, I have plenty more questions about the show, so if you've watched it, are thinking about watching it or just want to discuss 15 year old Claire Danes and Jared Leto or the fact that the name Jordan Catalano is said at least five times per episode, please feel free to leave a comment.
